If you dug a deep pit and dumped all the ashes in that, you would have an ash hole. I never recall coal fired anything. I know the house was old enough to have a coal shute. Reminds me of getting dressed when I was camping on my bike ride and the outside temps were in the 20's.

Yeah I am younger.. but I still remember coal chutes for heating ... and picking up black glossy little shards of anthracite
