BC, Pfizer and other Big Pharma companies sit on tons of IP. Much of it doesn't result in new drugs because it's not profitable for them.

In the case of mRNA, Pfizer saw no need to bring it to market until the COVID pandemic. They were just fine sticking with traditional vaccines.

Only when the need arose for a quick-to-develop vaccine did Pfizer decide to try out mRNA. And even then, Pfizer was just one of ten vaccines being developed for COVID.

That's why the 10-year timeline doesn't apply here. Same with Gilead's remdesivir, the first treatment approved by the FDA for COVID. Gilead didn't have to wait 10 years before bringing remdesivir into the market.
