NEW YORK, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Internet pioneer Netscape
Communications Corp's chief executive, James Barksdale, is
urging employees to stay focused on their jobs amid takeover
speculation.
Barksdale Thursday sent an E-mail message to employees,
saying, "These rumors are damaging to us and extremely
distracting," the New York Times said in its Sunday edition.
Barksdale also spoke to more than 2,000 employees Friday
saying, "We have defied the odds before and we can do it
again," according to the paper.
Netscape's stock jumped last week on speculation Sun
Microsystems Inc (NASDAQ:SUNW) or another technology company might
buy the company.
Netscape in January posted a $115.5 million loss for 1997
and has plans to lay off 400 of its 3,200 workers.
