"Cisco Weaves Faster Fabric -- Frames, not cells, will dominate gigabit enterprise networking"

"Hannigan pointed out that Cisco has yet to challenge its competitors'
high-capacity Gigabit Ethernet and Layer 3 switches, like 3Com's
CoreBuilder 9000,
Bay's Accelar and Cabletron's newly acquired
SmartSwitch Router, formerly Yago Systems Inc.'s MSR.

"It's easier to run Ethernet than ATM," said Steve Toy, assistant network
systems engineer at SAS Institute Inc., which plans to move from Fast
Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet, using 3Com equipment.
Although ATM is better
at running multimedia applications, frame switches are catching up, he said.

>>What's the problem with the USR part, if you don't mind my asking?<<
No more proprietary X2 technology. The replacement open standard (v.pcm/v.90) makes 3COM/USRX just another modem maker among many. It will be a crowded market. Also these modems will not help sell 3COM/USRX RAS. The RAS product has to sell on its own merits.
This is about 50% of 3COM revenue which we bought for $8 Billion.

<<< What's the problem with the USR part, if you don't mind my asking? I heard that they overpaid, and that USR had higher inventory than was thought...but on the other hand predictions seem to be for very strong modem sales through 2000. >>>

William,

Nothing is wrong with the USR/3Com deal. 3Com just not used to USR's business practices thats all. = )

People still do not realize that LONG Term, this deal puts 2 of the best companies in a stronger than ever position in the networking sector. Long Term = 5 - 10+ years.

So who cares about the shorts, they do whatever they want. Heck do it more, shorting is healthy for the company. As long as the company's fundamentals are still intact, majority of COMS investors are bound stay long. Plus it's needed to shake out all the wannabe longs.

(IMO) A few years down the line, COMS will be stronger than ever.

Happy Trading!
