Dave, I've been using the quote.xls toolbar for real-time portfolio data via PCQuote for six months with success.

I don't know the solution to your problem, but sometimes it helps just to know definitely that it can work.

I havn't tried the excel link myself but I was just reading a little about it on the TS web site yesterday. The manual at the site said it works with excel 5.0. Office 97 I believe is version 6.0. What version are you using? I don't know if it makes a difference.
