Netscape Battles Takeover Talk and Shrinking Sales nytimes.com

The Times weighs in on the other relevant company in this thread. In general the picture isn't all that pretty.

Netscape refused to comment publicly on the reports. But in an e-mail message to Netscape employees on Thursday, James Barksdale, the president and chief executive, said, "These rumors are damaging to us and extremely distracting."

On Friday, Barksdale again did not seem eager to auction off Netscape, people who attended a company meeting said. Speaking to more than 2,000 employees, Barksdale urged them to stay focused on their jobs. "We've defied the odds before and we can do it again," he said.

Cheers, Dan.
