Yes, that's how I know there is going to be a funeral. I can hear the backhoe being unloaded in the morning the day before. They dig the hole, then leave. I hear the ramps on the trailer when I'm having my morning coffee and watching the deer. It started as just a little half acre cemetery but we kept giving them an acre here and there and now it's about 5 acres.
I considered getting a grave there instead of a VA cemetery but I'm afraid they'll ask for more land again. They are always hitting us up for a couple acres but I've been able to duck them the last few years. Everyone that owned this land is buried there except the first couple which are probably somewhere in the woods for all I know. All the open fields were soybean fields so I know they aren't there. The original tongue and groove oak farmhouse collapsed just before I took over so I've been cleaning that area up as time permits. I suspect that behind it is where the graves were but I haven't found any kind of markers.
I finally pumped out, went down into and cleaned out the original hand dug well. Those guys were tough to dig and line that thing with rocks. Amazingly, I didn't find much in it. I figured there would be critter remains and I was hoping for some old coins. It was an open hole in the ground for years. I only found some snake, turtle and what I think we're possum bones. I put a metal lid over it now. There's still a chicken house, root cellar, outhouse and some other building standing but they're rough. I haven't decided if I'll save them or not. I saved the old barn a few years ago. There's a sheep pen that half the roof has caved. I kinda want to save it but it's totally impractical for anything. I'm leaning towards tearing it down and trying to salvage the 100+ year old oak beams, siding boards etc but I don't have a place to store them.
I'm learning you never have enough buildings. There's always stuff you want to get safely out of the weather.
