Also he was hired to write a book about constitutional law and he wrote one of his autobiographies instead.

As Smithee said, he was an adjunct. "Lecturer" is pretty low on the totem pole at UChicago, not even deemed to be an adjunct and are not considered faculty.

He was paid to lecture to a class, probably under the watch of a full professor on the faculty who had their name on the course.
