There are roughly 2500 years of recorded history during which time everything that could happen happened. You can find an historical analog for any prediction you want to make.

Not saying Russia won't invade.

Moscow denies that it intends to invade Ukraine but says that it’s duty-bound to protect Russians and Russian speakers in Donbas. It also says it can’t accept Ukraine joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
So, the main reason for this crisis is mentioned as an afterthought, as something not deserving comment.

It’s funny - because everything falls into place if one accepts - if only for a moment, as a mental exercise - that the Russians are telling the truth. That they really are troubled by the possibility of facing what they call “the most likely potential adversaries” - directly, across a thin line - without having Ukraine as a barrier. That they’re worried this may trigger potential MAD warfare.

Why did they have to amass troops? Because otherwise everyone ignores their concerns. Even with their troops near the border the US and NATO refuse to address the issue.

BTW, neutrality and NOT joining NATO used to be part of Ukraine's Constitution. Got lost, somehow.
