qdog Re: "WSJ has an article that has First Call est. at $.20, but '97 was $,23. Could be interesting play just before earnings."

Another bit of data: Tim Luke of Lehman Brothers now has QCOM with Q2 earnings at .17, Q3 at .27, and Q4 at .54 or a total of .98 for Q2-4 compared to actual .99 for Q2-4 this year. With an actual of .58 in Q1 this translates to 1.55 est for 98 compared to 1.12 actual for 97.

The play before earnings could indeed be interesting.

qdog,

After I racked my brains on the Korean issue and reviewed my notes on the cc, I am more optimistic about QCOM than before. These wake up calls are also good. In QCOM's case, it couldn't have come at a better time. The Superbowl was too distracting. I wonder how many upper managers were out playing golf, wining and dining instead of working.

Short term, I think we are dead. Within the sector, Nokia is reporting earnings next week and they should be good. Other news coming includes AMAT, DELL and HWP, all market movers. Valuations are so high now that any disappointment can set off the avalanche for the whole market. The fact that QCOM had already taken a hit does not immune the co from taking another hit.

Long term, QCOM will get their act together. Mexico is very interesting and not much attention had been focused here before. Korea will recover sooner than most, especially on the export side.

One big question is still the 3G issue. Isn't the standard simply deciding what game everyone wants to play? The fact that the world (at least the European world) decides to play baseball may be advantageous to the Yankees today but it does not preclude the Broncos' organization from fielding a great baseball team, especially when the big game is at least a few years away. Wasn't it LU that said they can work with either proposal? It will be great if everyone has to pay QCOM some IPR license fees but so what if they don't. Did we ever count 3G license fees in QCOM's valuation? Even though ERICY is pushing the w-CDMA, wouldn't QCOM have a technical advantage because they have been working with CDMA longer? Comments?
