<..You've defined the layers..>

Actually, this was from Techweb's encyclopedia. Apologies for forgetting to reference it then.

<..but do you have more information regarding the "concerns" - ideally on a per layer basis?..>

Unfortunately, I didn't get them down. The Broadcom guy ran through a couple, and left the ADSL topic refering to the significant technical and interoperability challenges of layers 2-6. Steenburgen nodded in agreement, as did others. ATM/PPP/ADSL interoperation (btw, as conference participant Diamond Lane is attempting) was mentioned as a source of difficulty, stating ADSL is hard enough, without trying to bridge to ATM. Of course, ATM is finally picking up speed, and most see it as the QoS holy grail (RSVP isn't thought to be a likely pathway for IP QoS)

Sorry I don't have more details. Perhaps others more knowledgable will jump in. I'm sure developers have at least alpha (and propietary) solutions, but this seems to introduce more "layers" <g> of hurdles.

And fwiw, the thought by most that internal ADSL was likely not effectively doable seemed to quash the impetus behind CPQ's involvement.

SteveG, what is the significance of 500 khz??

<<AMTX's Steenburgen thinks the CPQ proposed internal ADSL modems will be
VERY problematic on the physical layer (w/ a max of 500khz, IF anyone even DOES
internal),>>

How does that limit the modem??

Also I know that many people are excited about Efficient Networks. They are already shipping a product (based on the Aware chipset) which includes ATM hardware and software to supposably provide QOS. I talked to one of their managers and he kept telling me that "Bill G wants ATM to the desktop and that NT 5.0 will have the drivers built-in". Although I still don't really understand how all of this fits together.

Steve,

What was the bad press? I missed that.

Thanks
