The Sixers Nets Trade and its potential NBA Eastern Conference Impact

It has been a long tedious ride for a 76ers fan. My interest in the team has been rekindled and I'll follow them closely the rest of the season on this SI boatd. The NBA Easten Conference was already highly competetive before te trade and now will be even more so. Despite the fact that Simmons did not play a single minute since the beginning of the season The 76ers are currently 1st in the Atlantic Division and 3rd overall in the Eastern Conference ...

These clips from before the All-Star Break are excepted from HoopsRunors: hoopsrumors.com

With just 24 games between now and the playoffs, it will be a challenge for the Sixers‘ new superstar duo of James Harden and Joel Embiid to mesh quickly enough to make the team a legitimate championship threat this spring.

However, head coach Doc Rivers‘ plan isn’t to work out the kinks this year and focus on winning a title in 2023. As Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer writes, Rivers fully believes the team is capable of a championship run this spring and wants to make the most of the opportunity.

“I always think right now,” Rivers said on Thursday. “I’ve been in this league too long. And I always go back to [the Celtics’ 2007/08 NBA championship team.] Kevin [Garnett] and I talk about it all the time. I remember the first year during training camp we had a meeting and they were saying, ‘Man, we have to get it together. This might not be the year. But by next year, we might…’ I said, ‘Next year? Are you guys kidding me? Next year one of you can get hurt.’. ... “I know it’s short. I know it’s going to be hard to get it together. But having said that, the time is always now.” ... [ ] ...
We’re a week removed from the biggest trade in the NBA this season and the early returns haven’t even come in.

James Harden has yet to make his Sixers debut. Ben Simmons remains a few weeks away from wearing a Nets uniform.

According to VegasInsider.com, the Nets and Bucks are currently co-favorites to win the Eastern Conference with the Sixers having the third-best odds.

It will be fascinating to see who ultimately benefited from the trade or perhaps if both teams weakened themselves.

This is an all-in move by the Sixers, given Harden’s age and penchant for quickly souring on the team he’s on. Brooklyn was backed into a corner by Harden’s desire to play in Philly but the deal may end up improving its chemistry.

Harden obviously gives the Sixers a formidable 1-2 offensive punch with Most Valuable Player candidate Joel Embiid. The latter has delivered the best season of his career, keeping Philadelphia within striking distance of the conference’s best record despite Simmons’ refusal to play.

Harden will certainly ease the scoring burden on Embiid. The Sixers had to surrender one of their best shooters, Seth Curry, in the deal but held onto defensive stalwart Matisse Thybulle and young point guard Tyrese Maxey. While Philadelphia apparently tried to dump Tobias Harris’ contract prior to the deadline, he’s still a solid, consistent, low-maintenance contributor.

If and when the Nets get all their pieces back from injuries, their roster remains stacked. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving can carry the scoring load and won’t have to incorporate Harden into the equation. Given that Adam Silver criticized New York City’s vaccine mandate this week, there’s a good chance Irving will eventually be able to play home games.

Simmons’ lack of perimeter shooting could be masked by the weapons around him. He’s also one of the top defenders in the league, so if his free throw shooting isn’t a total disaster, he should be able to finish out games. That’s a best case scenario for Simmons and the Nets – it’s anyone guess whether Simmons is physically and mentally ready to perform under playoff pressure.

With Curry, Patty Mills and Joe Harris (whenever he returns from his ankle issues), there are plenty of perimeter shooters to space the floor for Brooklyn.

Both teams will have to build chemistry on the fly and it’s important to note Embiid, Harden, Durant and Irving have all dealt with significant injuries in recent seasons, often during the postseason.

That leads us to our question of the day: In the wake of the blockbuster James Harden-Ben Simmons trade, which team will go deeper into the playoffs – the Sixers or Nets? <<

Major 76ers Trade: James Harden's Philadelphia 76ers debut v the Minnesota Timberwolves

espn.com

Shortly after James Harden was introduced as the newest member of the Philadelphia 76ers, the superstar guard was asked the question dominating the NBA world after the blockbuster trade deadline swap with the Brooklyn Nets for Ben Simmons:

How will this partnership with Joel Embiid work?

"I think we complement each other," Harden said early in his news conference on Feb. 15. "Obviously, the whole world knows how great Joel has been playing."

A few hours later, Embiid was asked the same question.

"As you look at the teams that have won in the past, whether you look at the Golden State [Warriors] teams, even the [Los Angeles] Lakers and Milwaukee [Bucks] last year, they just move the ball," he said.

"[Harden is] probably up there as far as the best playmakers out of the pick-and-roll, so obviously you got to add that even more to our offense."

Friday night offers the first glimpse of the Harden-Embiid dynamic, when the 76ers go on the road to face the Minnesota Timberwolves. It will be the first of a 24-game sprint to the regular-season finish for the third-place Eastern Conference 76ers and their new All-Star duo, who must figure things out on the fly in the hopes of delivering Philadelphia (35-23) its first NBA title since 1983.

To get a sense of how Philly's experiment could play out, we asked scouts, executives and coaches around the league what pressure points they're watching in Harden's debut and throughout the rest of 2021-22.

The push and pull between Harden and Embiid

For the partnership to work between the 2018 MVP and the front-runner for this season's award, it's going to require both to shift away from the typical styles they've enjoyed throughout their careers -- being the center of their team's universes.

"I've got to become more of a pick-and-roll player or pick-and-pop just to help my teammates and help him," Embiid said last week. "[Harden is] more of an off-the-dribble 3-point shooter, but I get doubled a lot. To be able to go against those double teams, you've got to be able to fire up 3s off-the-catch."

Of Harden's 102 3-pointers this season, just 12 have come off catch-and-shoot situations, according to Second Spectrum tracking of NBA Advanced Stats.

That push and pull will be difficult to balance, and the matter of which star will lead the way -- from possession-to-possession, let alone game-to-game -- will be closely monitored.

"They're not adding a role player for a playoff run," a Western Conference executive said. "They're adding a guy that's probably going to be their highest usage player."

Embiid has been at the center of everything the 76ers have done this season -- he currently leads the NBA in usage rate for the second straight season -- and is in the middle of arguably the greatest year of his career.

But Embiid has never played with someone as ball-dominant as Harden, and several of those asked about the partnership said Embiid must make the biggest adjustment for one basic reason: He usually won't start with the ball in his hands.

"The single biggest thing is Joel's adjustment to his offensive role changing," an Eastern Conference executive said. "It's not just gonna be, 'Go set ball screens,' because he won't. But it also won't be what it was before the break.

"How he reacts will make a major difference. If he can keep it together, I think this could go great."

Harden, meanwhile, has proved -- including during his two-season, 80-game run with the Nets -- that he is not exactly energetic when he doesn't have the ball in his hands. And, like with Embiid's adjustment to Harden having the ball in his hands, there was just as much discussion over Harden's willingness to adapt to play differently off the ball than he has before.

"Who will they play through?" a Western Conference assistant coach said. "James and Joel straight pick-and-roll? Will they just go to Joel in the post? When it was Chris [Paul] and James [with the Houston Rockets], James would just stand there when he doesn't have the ball."

The point guard partnership: Harden and Tyrese Maxey

This season, Maxey -- the second-year guard in Philadelphia -- has been a revelation filling in for Simmons as the team's starting point guard and was viewed as untouchable in trade talks with Brooklyn. But now he is playing alongside Harden.

"It's definitely an adjustment for Maxey," the West executive said. "He's going from playing primarily with Joel and floor spacers to becoming one of them."

After shooting 30% from 3-point range last season, Maxey is up to 39% this year on 3.6 attempts per game. But he has yet to prove he's a consistent spot-up shooter -- and certainly not to the degree that Seth Curry, a 43.8% career 3-point shooter and the guy Maxey is replacing at shooting guard, has been the past season-and-a-half for Philadelphia. Maxey has shot 38.5% on catch-and-shoot 3s compared to 46% for Curry, according to Second Spectrum.

Shooting was already an issue before trading Curry: Philadelphia is 29th in total made 3-pointers this season.

"They don't -- just like they didn't have enough last year," an Eastern Conference scout said, when asked if the 76ers have enough shooting. Maybe if they're talented enough they'll overcome it. For the really great teams, when you get the stars, the blueprint is simple: Surround them with shooting."

Coach Doc Rivers has said Philadelphia needs another guard, and the 76ers have struggled when Maxey isn't on the court. Over the past 15 games, Maxey's 8.9 net rating is best on the team.

Now, there should be no reason not to have either Harden or Maxey out there at all times, giving Maxey plenty of chances to play on-ball.

"[Maxey is] a better player than I thought he'd be, and he's been a nice downhill player for him," the Eastern Conference executive said. "He should be doing that for the second unit, though there shouldn't be a second when one of James or Joel isn't out there."

Will the 76ers be good enough defensively?
Even for those who wonder if Harden has lost a step over the past year after a series of hamstring injuries, there's universal agreement he will be a boost to Philadelphia's offense.

And while Harden isn't exactly replacing a defensive juggernaut in Curry, there are real questions the 76ers have to answer about how they're going to guard elite offenses, starting with the league's top wing scorers.

"Oh, yeah," Rivers said, after Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum combined for 57 points in the Boston Celtics' win last week, when asked if slowing down big wing scorers is a problem.

"No doubt. No doubt. We will [do it], but we have to do better than tonight in a lot of areas."

Rivers has said Maxey will start alongside Harden, but if he decides to go in another direction, there isn't a clear answer on the roster. Any of the other available options -- Matisse Thybulle, Danny Green and Furkan Korkmaz -- come with their own flaws.

"Seth is gone, but you have Tyrese, you have Harden, and Harden is at his best when you switch and that's not [assistant coach and defensive coordinator Dan Burke's] style, and Joel is generally going to be in the paint," the West assistant said.

Harden has switched 42% of on-ball screens he's been involved in this season, more than any NBA team. But Philadelphia has switched 13%, the league's third-lowest rate.

"The solution is then [the 76ers] have to play Matisse, and having faith in Matisse offensively seems shaky at this point," the assistant continued. "If you have to play him, then he's a net negative on offense. Or you play Tyrese, who is a net negative on defense."

Friday night, though, the time for discussion will finally be replaced by seeing the first part of this grand experiment. Then, it will be up to Harden, Embiid and the 76ers to find a way to make it work in time for the postseason.

"We got to get on the floor together and try to build chemistry," Embiid said after Sunday's All-Star Game, looking ahead to the stretch run. "I think it's going to be easy to build that chemistry.

"Everybody is on the same page. We all are trying to win a championship, so that's the goal."

ESPN's Kevin Pelton contributed to this story. <<

The New 2920 Sixers: After Harden's Debut-

>> The Sixers are way better with James Harden than with Ben Simmons

Eliot Shorr Parks

msn.com

Harden was everything the Sixers could have hoped for on Friday night in the team’s 133-102 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, his debut with the team after a blockbuster trade just over two weeks ago.

After years of having to watch the team try to win with a point guard that both couldn’t shoot and refused to shoot, the Sixers looked like a completely different team with an actual All Star at point guard in Harden, who both distributed and scored the ball.

Harden finished with 27 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds while hitting five three pointers.

Yes, it was just one game. But anyone watching the Sixers on Friday night had to come away with one obvious and major takeaway — this team is going to be very, very good.

James Harden: There is a lot to be impressed about with Harden. His court vision. His willingness to attack the basket. His ability to shoot. What stood out on Friday night, however, was how his basketball intelligence allows him to control a game even when it looks like he is moving at half speed. Harden was in complete control of the game when he was on the field, doing a great job finding his teammates for easy, open looks, while also making sure he kept the defense honest by attacking the basket.

There were plenty of standout moments for Harden on Friday. His first basket was an and-one layup that came from a drive from the baseline. He hit a step back three and made it despite being fouled. He had a beautiful full-court pass to Tyrese Maxey off of a defensive rebound. He drilled a three in the second half with the clock shot running down.

Simply put, Harden is a superstar. He is one of the best players in the league. He is going to be the reason the Sixers make a serious run at the championship.

Joel Embiid: For most of the game Embiid was not his normal, dominant self. In fact, in the first half, Embiid didn’t play that well. Then, with the team running away with it in the third quarter, Embiid hit a three to move him up to a quiet 19 points, seven rebounds and three assists with his team holding a very comfortable double-digit lead. Embiid finished with what had to be the easiest 34 points he has ever had in his career.

Life had to feel great for Embiid on Friday, as he still put up great numbers, but didn’t have to carry the team on a night where he was off. Embiid has never had a teammate that could carry the team when he was off. Far too often with Simmons on the court if Embiid wasn’t at his best, the team had no chance. Now, with Harden, Embiid has somebody else to lean on.

As good as Embiid is, the Sixers were always going to be at their best when he didn’t have to be their best player on offense. It is easier to be an elite team when the offense is run through an elite guard. Embiid had to be thrilled with how things went on Friday night, and excited about how much easier his new life on the court is going to be.

Tobias Harris: A key to the Sixers being an elite team that can win in the post season is going to be the willingness of Harden’s teammates to shoot quickly when they get open looks. That starts with Tobias Harris.

Friday night was a positive start.

Harris passed the first test, taking a pass from Harden midway through the first quarter and quickly taking (and making) a wide open three. That is exactly what the Sixers want and need Harris to do. Later in the half, however, Harris had another chance at a wide-open three — but this time he pump faked, drove to the lane and kicked it out.

Still, despite a few instances where he passed up an open three, Harris finished the game with six three attempts. That was just one off of his season high of seven, but those seven attempts game in a game where he played 37 minutes, as opposed to the 29 he played on Friday night.

Harris will need to make a higher percentage (he shot just 33%), but the coaches should be encourage by what they saw in Harris first game with Harden.

Tyrese Maxey: A big beneficiary of the Harden trade is going to be Maxey. The second-year player has gone from carrying the weight of being the point guard and the primary option on the perimeter to what he is much more suited to be at this point in his career — a guard that can focus on attacking. Maxey attacked the basket relentlessly on Friday night, finishing with 28 points and hitting a few key shots at the end of the shot clock. Maxey seems set to have a big second half of the season in his role as an attacking shooting guard.

Free Throws: The joke going into Harden and Embiid’s first game together was that it was going to be a long night for the free throw line.

That joke proved to be very, very true.

The Sixers lived at the free throw line on Friday night, attempting 16 in the first quarter alone, and finishing with 36 attempts. As expected it was Embiid and Harden that leads the way, finishing with a combined 22, hitting 19.

There is certainly some irony in the fact that the Sixers without Ben Simmons, who can’t hit free throws, have become a team that lives and thrives at the free throw line. But while it might lead to longer games, it is definitely a positive for this team. The Sixers ability to get to the line pretty much whenever they want is huge, not only to help carry the offense, but it helps calm things down when/if the opposing team starts to make a run. It is also a much more reliable shot. The Sixers have gone from a team that avoided the line to one that can count on it when they need it. That is going to be huge in the playoffs. <<

The New 2022 Sixers: On the road vs the Knicks in Harden's 2nd game as a Sixer

Harden's 2nd 25p/10r/15a/5s historic Triple-Double career night

Philadelphia defeated New York 125-109 in Sunday's Eastern Conference game at Madison Square Garden and improved to 37-23 with a third straight victory. James Harden, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey led the way for the visitors, who lost the first two meetings against the Knicks this season but controlled crunch time in this matchup. The Sixers surged ahead late and are now 2-0 with Harden and 37-23 overall. These 2 Atlantic Division teams play again in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

In his first two games with Philly, Harden is averaging 28 points (on 58% shooting), 14 assists and 9 rebs. Today Harden notched a double-double in the first half alone with step-back threes, dimes to Embiid and Maxey and even multiple steals on the defensive end. Harden became the first Sixers player to accomplish a 25/10/5/5 game and the first NBA player ever to have at least 25 points and 10 assists in each of his first two games with a new team.

Since the NBA started tracking steals in 1973-74, Harden is one of only four players to record at least 25p/10r/15a/5s in a game, and he and Chris Paul are the only players to do so multiple times (twice each). <<

ESPN NBA Power Rankings, Week 20

NBA Power Rankings, Week 20 - Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets impress over the weekend (espn.com)

Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets impress over the weekend
What happens when you pair a former NBA MVP with the current favorite to win this season's award? Well, you get the latest version of the Philadelphia 76ers, who have looked unguardable since James Harden's debut alongside Joel Embiid on Friday night.

In two games -- on the road against the Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks -- the duo combined for 127 points and 59 free throw attempts, including 27 foul shots by Embiid on Sunday, the most in a single game in nearly three years.

As for the other side of the 2021-22 campaign's biggest blockbuster, the Brooklyn Nets are still waiting for the debut of Ben Simmons as well as the return of Kevin Durant from a knee injury, but Kyrie Irving sparked a huge comeback win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night. In his first action since the All-Star break, Irving poured in a season-high 38 points. Brooklyn has won three of its past five games following an 11-game losing streak.

Where do the East contenders and the rest of the league check in this week?

1. Phoenix Suns | 2021-22 record: 49-12 | Previous ranking: 1

For only the third time all season, the Suns dropped consecutive games, with losses to the Pelicans and Jazz. Of course, both of those defeats came without point guard Chris Paul, who is out with an avulsion fracture in his right thumb. With Paul sidelined, Suns guard Devin Booker has gotten back to his playmaking ways, averaging eight assists since the All-Star break, including 12 against Oklahoma City on Thursday. Those were the most Booker has had in a game since Paul joined the Suns last season. -- Lopez

2. Memphis Grizzlies | 2021-22 record: 42-20 |Previous ranking: 2

Ja Morant broke the Grizzlies' regular-season scoring record with his 46 points in Saturday's win over the Bulls. It was his fifth 40-point performance of the season; no other player in Grizzlies history had notched more than one in a season. It was the 19th time this season that Morant scored at least 20 points in the paint. Only five players have exceeded that in a season over the past 25 years, according to ESPN Stats & Information research: Shaquille O'Neal, Amar'e Stoudemire, Anthony Davis, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Zion Williamson. -- MacMahon

3. Golden State Warriors | 2021-22 record: 43-18 | Previous ranking: 3

The Warriors blew a 21-point lead against the Mavericks on Sunday night, and they play five of their next six games on the road. Their title chase is contingent upon Draymond Green coming back from a disk issue. Green has started doing drills in practice again, but it remains to be seen when he'll play in games. The Warriors need to continue to tread water as they wait for him to return. -- Friedell

4. Miami Heat | 2021-22 record: 40-21 | Previous ranking: 4

Miami has won three straight and eight of its past nine. Bam Adebayo continues to put up huge numbers this month, averaging 22.7 points and 11.3 rebounds. The Heat are rounding into form as they head down the stretch atop the Eastern Conference. A win in Monday night's game against the No. 2 Bulls would clinch the tiebreaker for the season. -- Friedell

5. Philadelphia 76ers | 2021-22 record: 37-23 | Previous ranking: 7

It's been a dream start for James Harden and Joel Embiid. Yes, the 76ers have had a couple of good opponents to start off with in Minnesota and New York. But that doesn't diminish how smoothly the two superstars have fit -- as Embiid expects, after saying so several times. One thing seems certain: With two of the league's best foul-drawers on the same team, 76ers games are going to be long. -- Bontemps

6. Chicago Bulls | 2021-22 record: 39-22 | Previous ranking: 5

The Bulls own the fifth-best record in the NBA, but they are winless (0-7) against the four teams -- the Suns, Warriors, Grizzlies and Heat -- ahead of them, including a loss to Memphis in their most recent game. The schedule is about to provide another test in Chicago's next four tilts, starting with Monday's game against the Heat in Miami and followed by matchups with the Hawks, Bucks and Sixers. -- Collier

7. Utah Jazz | 2021-22 record: 38-22 | Previous ranking: 10

The Jazz have won eight of nine -- including victories over the Mavericks and Suns coming out of the All-Star break -- to give themselves some breathing room for home-court advantage in the first round. Donovan Mitchell has averaged 27.9 points and 5.4 assists with .497/.469/.848 shooting splits in eight games since returning from a two-week absence due to a concussion. -- MacMahon

8. Milwaukee Bucks | 2021-22 record: 36-25 | Previous ranking: 6

The Bucks have dropped four of their past five games, including losses to the Suns, Sixers and Nets, as their defense has continued to slip without Brook Lopez. Milwaukee has the second-worst defensive rating in the NBA during that span, ahead of only the Rockets. It faces the Heat and Bulls this week before a Finals rematch with the Suns on Sunday. -- Collier

9. Dallas Mavericks | 2021-22 record: 36-25 | Previous ranking: 8

The Mavs' primary motivation for their trade-deadline deal was to move on from Kristaps Porzingis and his max contract, but Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans have been significant contributors off the bench since arriving from Washington. Dinwiddie has averaged 14 points on 63.9% shooting from the floor, highlighted by his 24-point performance in Sunday's comeback win over the Warriors. Bertans has averaged 9.8 points and is shooting 39.3% from 3-point range. -- MacMahon

10. Boston Celtics | 2021-22 record: 36-27 | Previous ranking: 12

The Celtics were due for a dud like they had against the Pacers on Sunday. But after largely feasting on bad or injury-depleted teams during their recent ascent in the standings, the Celtics' upcoming stretch of games -- at home against Atlanta, Memphis and Brooklyn -- should begin to provide a better look into just how high this team's ceiling has risen with its improved play of late. -- Bontemps

11. Cleveland Cavaliers | 2021-22 record: 36-24 | Previous ranking: 9

With Darius Garland (back) and Caris LeVert (foot) sidelined, Cleveland fell to the Pistons on Thursday in its first game out of the All-Star break and lost Rajon Rondo (toe) for the next couple of weeks in the process. Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley combined for 32 points and 25 rebounds against the Wizards on Saturday, however, to help the Cavs to a bounce-back win. -- McMenamin

12. Denver Nuggets | 2021-22 record: 35-25 | Previous ranking: 11

It's time to give Michael Malone his flowers. He won his 300th game last week in Sacramento -- where he was fired as head coach during the 2014-15 season -- and he continues to get the best out of the injury-plagued Nuggets. Denver beat Portland on Sunday for its sixth straight victory. And Michael Porter Jr. and Jamal Murray could potentially be back in the next month. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Sunday that Porter is progressing toward being cleared for on-court contact within the next week. Malone's team is only going to be that much more dangerous come playoff time if Nikola Jokic can get reinforcements by then. -- Youngmisuk

13. Brooklyn Nets | 2021-22 record: 32-29 | Previous ranking: 14

Things are looking up for the Nets, a team with title aspirations that is currently headed for the play-in tournament. Kyrie Irving dropped 38 points and led Brooklyn to a surprising -- and much-needed -- win over the Bucks on Saturday. Kevin Durant is expected back this week as he continues to recover from a sprained left MCL. The Nets continue to say that Ben Simmons is in a good mental place as he reacclimates to the NBA. And the New York City vaccination mandate could be lifted in the coming weeks, allowing Irving to play in home games. -- Friedell

14. Toronto Raptors | 2021-22 record: 32-27 | Previous ranking: 13

It's now losses in four of five games for Toronto after a terrific stretch of play before that. If Toronto has designs on breaking into the top six in the East, it will need to turn things around quickly; the Raptors sit 2.5 games out of sixth with 23 games to go. -- Bontemps

15. Minnesota Timberwolves | 2021-22 record: 32-29 | Previous ranking: 15

Anthony Edwards has fallen into an uncharacteristic slump over his past four games, averaging 8.8 points on 21.4% shooting with 3.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds. He has made just two of his 23 3-point attempts (8.7%) and is shooting 55.6% from the free throw line. Edwards had been battling nagging injuries in his ankle and knee recently, but he maintains that he is healthy and simply in a shooting slump. -- Collier <<

James Harden’s passing game

Film Review: James Harden's pick-and-roll passing opens up new worlds for Sixers (1:56 video)

James Harden wasted no time showing off his elite passing ability in his first two games as a Sixer. Noah Levick breaks it down.

That would be true even if he was merely decent at scoring.

“We all knew how great of a scorer he is,” Tobias Harris said Tuesday, “but his passing … he’s a really good passer, man. No-look passes; on time, on target; quick reads. His passing ability, I didn’t know he was that good of a passer.”

In truth, one could accurately go quite a bit further than “really good” to classify Harden’s pick-and-roll passing. The video above focuses on that skill — or multitude of skills, really — which has helped the 10-time All-Star win his first two games as a Sixer while averaging 14 assists per contest.

Whether Harden’s passing in the pick-and-roll is “underrated” or not is obviously subjective. But he’s led the NBA in isolation possessions per game every season since 2015-16 (the first year NBA.com/Stats has play type data for), and his efficiency on that high volume has consistently been excellent. Just like Joel Embiid the last several years on post-ups, Harden in a season has regularly isolated more than many teams because he’s so brilliant at it.

So, if he’s been viewed as step-back shooting, solo scorer, that wouldn’t be unfair. His pick-and-roll tool bag is vast, though, especially in contrast to the Sixers’ ball handlers during Embiid’s career.

The snug pick-and-roll with Ben Simmons and Embiid looked intriguing on occasion, but traditional pick-and-rolls weren’t feasible because Simmons was much less threatening on the perimeter than a usual point guard and appropriately faced abnormal, dramatically sagging defenses. Markelle Fultz’s pull-up shooting also didn’t worry the opposition.

Former Sixers head coach Brett Brown pointed to opponents not automatically going under screens on Shake Milton pick-and-rolls as a key factor heading into the team’s “bubble” run at Disney World. He started Milton, played Simmons more off the ball in half-court offense, and tried to shift the team’s offensive approach before the Australian’s season-ending left knee injury.

Unlike Simmons, Fultz, Milton, Alec Burks, Trey Burke, the always-developing Tyrese Maxey and any other Embiid-era pick-and-roll player, Harden is adept at advanced reads.

Yes, it’s more worthwhile for Embiid to roll hard because defenses have valid concern about Harden’s scoring and show him aggressive coverages that create openings. But Harden’s command of the entire floor is crucial, too. If a defender tags Embiid and momentarily leaves Maxey open in the corner, Harden will rifle the ball to the 21-year-old. If anyone loses attentiveness on the weak side, he’ll likely see that, too. Defenses know that clogging Embiid’s path to the paint isn’t sufficient anymore.

“He’s really good at finding ways the defense makes mistakes,” Harris said. “You’ve seen Matisse (Thybulle) get a bunch of cuts and lobs at the rim; Tyrese is getting out in transition; he’s hitting Joel in pick-and-rolls — all the way down the line of how he plays. The ball movement, that always helps us as a group.”

Harden’s passing creates possibilities for the Sixers well beyond Embiid. While defenders continue to send help off of Thybulle, his screening, rolling, cutting, and athleticism in transition now seem like traits that could be legitimate assets.

“James is a better passer than what we’ve had,” head coach Doc Rivers said. “Matisse is the roamer for us. And the more he gets it, the more free he will cut. Before, he would cut and not get it; that makes you not cut. And now he’s cutting and getting it. It’ll make him cut more.”

Georges Niang called Harden a “basketball savant.”

“He does such a good job of manipulating the defense,” Niang said. “When people think he’s dribbling between his legs, if you watch his eyes, he’s looking at the defender’s feet. How can I get his foot to drop? Or if you watch, he’s looking past the defender and looking to see if the big man is standing in the lane. And if he’s going to go cleanse to the other side, he’s going to drive the ball and make you make a decision. So, little things that people who aren’t really into basketball don’t notice. They’re like, ‘Ah, he’s just wasting dribbles.’

“But he’s just timing you up to use your strengths against you. It’s amazing that I get to see it every day because when we were playing against him, it was like, ‘Man, this is a pain in the ass.’ But when he’s doing that for you, it’s such a blessing. I was telling someone the other day, you have two of the best iso scorers in the NBA right now, but both of them are willing passers and draw so much attention. So I’m just excited to see the team build and move forward.” <<

The Road Ahead for the new 2023 76ers

msn.com

James Harden arrived at the Wells Fargo Center Wednesday wearing a Celine designer jacket and pants populated with swirls of orange and yellow resembling flames.

The chosen attire perfectly symbolized the 76ers’ start to the Harden era. They have totaled three consecutive double-digit wins against the plucky-but-overmatched Minnesota Timberwolves and reeling New York Knicks, with Harden stuffing the box score, Joel Embiid maintaining his MVP-caliber play and Tyrese Maxey thriving while playing more off the ball.

Coach Doc Rivers said that he does not “overdo” regular-season games because of potential injuries and scheduling quirks for both teams that do not exist during the playoffs. Yet the upcoming week should be a better barometer for a 38-23 Sixers team that has vaulted into contender status since its blockbuster deadline trade that brought perennial All-Star Harden to Philly.

James Harden is on pace to pass Reggie Miller on the all-time three-pointers list
They next play a home-road, back-to-back on Friday against the 36-26 Cleveland Cavaliers, who entered Thursday in fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings, and Saturday against the 41-22 Miami Heat, who sit atop the conference. Then, they face the second-seeded Chicago Bulls (39-23) on Monday before a March 10 showdown against the Brooklyn Nets (32-31) that will be emotionally charged whether Ben Simmons plays or not.

“If we win them all, it doesn’t mean that we’ve arrived,” Rivers said. “You know what I mean by that? We want to be good and great by the end of this, right? And we need to win games doing it, but I’m not using that as some secret [sauce].”

The Sixers are 6-3 against the Cavaliers, Heat, Bulls and Nets so far this season, which helped them rise to third place in the tightly packed East standings even before Harden arrived. And that is just one segment of a challenging final quarter of the regular season.

They also have two road games remaining against the Cavaliers. They play the Denver Nuggets (sixth in the Western Conference standings entering Thursday), Dallas Mavericks (fifth in the West) and defending-champion Milwaukee Bucks (fourth in the East) at home, plus a back-to-back at the Wells Fargo Center against the Toronto Raptors (seventh in the East) and Heat. Later this month, they will travel West to play the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers and Phoenix Suns, whose 50-12 record is the best in the NBA.

The Sixers entered Thursday two games back of the first-place Heat and 2 ½ ahead of the sixth-place Boston Celtics (37-27), illustrating how dramatically seeding could shift during the next five weeks.

Rivers used the phrase “speed dating” to describe what it’s like to implement Harden during this short stretch following the All-Star break.

The coach has opted to sharpen the three or four plays Harden currently knows before expanding the collection of sets they run. The Sixers hit their first snag with Harden during Wednesday’s opening 24 minutes against the Knicks, allowing 16 points off turnovers and playing with a self-described lack of energy before their second-half turnaround. Harden said the Sixers continue to “harp on” transition defense and rebounding, two areas where they rank among the worst in the NBA this season.

“If we do that at a high level more times than not, it’s gonna be very difficult for teams to beat us,” Harden said. “Because, offensively, we get pretty good shots each possession.”

Harden Mania puts Sixers at the center of a Philly love story a decade in the making | David Murphy
Next up is the back-to-back Rivers called “brutal” because of the travel distance from Philly to Miami. It is the second time the Sixers have been forced into that particular scheduling oddity this season, after they beat Boston at home and then rallied to top the Heat on the road in mid-January in one of their more impressive stretches of the season.

Replicating those results against the Cavaliers and Heat this weekend would be an ideal start to the Sixers’ barometer-setting week.

“We’ll be ready for all of them, hopefully,” Rivers said, “and can win all of them.” <<

Tyrese Maxey scored a game-high 33 points, plus four rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a block. Maxey shot 10-for-15 from the field, 5-for-6 from 3-point range, and 8-for-9 from the charity stripe. “He’s a fearless kid,” Doc Rivers said of Maxey postgame. “He’s playing great. He’s getting great shots.”

In the most recent meeting between the Sixers and Heat on Jan. 15, the Sixers took a 109-98 victory in Miami. Embiid led the way in the win, recording a 32-point, 12-rebound double-double, plus three assists, a steal, and a block. Harris added 22 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and a block.

The new 2022 76ers: Harden-less 76ers lose to East leading Heat in Miami

A tall task to defeat the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference on the road after shooting 7-for-41 from beyond the arc. James Harden sat on the second night of a back-to-back to rehab his left hamstring.

James Harden was ruled out for Saturday's game against the Miami Heat due to scheduled management of left hamstring injury. The 32-year-old was ruled out through the All-Star break while he rehabbed the hamstring ailment. He's had multiple instances in which he was forced to miss time with hamstring tightness this season, and he also sat out with a knee hyperextension at one point.

Heading into the night, this felt like a schedule loss. Then, the news that James Harden would sit as he still nurses a left hamstring injury didn’t instill much confidence. Credit to the Sixers for putting up a fight, but their tired legs were too much to overcome in a 99-82 loss to the Heat in Miami Saturday night. The loss drops the Sixers to 39-24 and snaps a five-game winning streak. They’ll host the Bulls on Monday. ... The Sixers shot the ball like a team with tired legs. They scored 14 points in the fourth and made just 7 of 40 from three on the night. Meanwhile, the Heat, one of the best shooting teams in the NBA, made 48.1 percent from deep. Tough schedule break and no Harden, this game went pretty much as expected. bleacherreport.com

Embiid recorded 22 points (4-15 FG, 0-6 3Pt, 14-14 FT), 15 rebounds, two assists and two steals in 36 minutes during Saturday's 99-82 loss to Miami. <<

76ers tonight Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center against Chicao Bulls at 7 p.m. ET ..,

TV Broadcast: NBC Sports Philadelphia with pregame Live at 6:15

DeAndre Jordan will be available for the second time as a Sixer backup Center, and it looks likely that he’ll debut. He’s back with Doc Rivers, his coach during the Clippers’ Lob City era, and glad to already have a strong (and candid) relationship with the Sixers’ head coach.

James Harden's position in the all-time three-pointer list of players should move to number 3 tonight. Stephen Curry dominates the list with 3,093 threes scored throughout his career. In second place,is Ray Allen with 2,973 three-pointers. Reggie Miller's next with 2,560. By the time the last game ended, James finished with 2,559, which is only two shots away from the all-time third place in the list. It's safe to say that Harden will surely finish second on this list but he likely won't surpass Stephen Curry.

=====

On Saturday, the Miami Heat toppled the Philadelphia 76ers in a matchup of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference. James Harden didn't suit up. He was held out in the second leg of a back-to-back but the Heat limited Joel Embiid to 26.7% shooting to hand the Sixers their first loss since the All-Star break.

ESPN has the 76ers power ranked at number 5 in the NBA behind 1. Phoenix Suns, 2. Miami Heat, 3. Memphis Grizzlies, 4. Milwaukee Bucks but ahead of 6. Golden State Warriors, 7. Utah Jazz 8. Boston Celtics and 9. Chicago Bulls and notes:

5. Philadelphia 76ers
2021-22 record: 39-24
Previous ranking: 5

Philadelphia is 4-0 with Harden in the lineup but beginning with Saturday's loss in Miami (which Harden sat out on the second night of a back-to-back) things will get tougher in the games ahead. Even though Thursday's game against Brooklyn won't include Ben Simmons, who is still working through back issues as he continues to ramp up his activity level, seeing Harden against his old team will provide more than enough drama. (-- Bontemps)

The official NBA league Standings have the 76ers ranked 6th ahead of the Bucks (7) and Bulls (8).

The 76ers play the Bulls tonight at home in Philly and then play the Nets (still without Ben Simmons) at home on Thursday. The Nets are ranked 17th in NBA league Standings at 32-33 (.491%) and are 19.5 games out of 1st. They are a long way back of a playoff spot but still hope to challenge for one.

Another slow start and poor transition defense but Philly clawed it back.

Sixers Postgame Live (14:15 Video)

An overtime win on the first night of a back-to-back isn't ideal, but the Sixers pull off their eight straight win over the Orlando Magic. Joel Embiid led the offense with 35 points (15/17 FT). Tobias Harris and James Harden both added 26 points.

Joel Embiid dropped his 41st double-double of the season, putting up 35 PTS, 16 REB, 7 AST, 2 STL & 1 BLK as the Philadelphia 76ers survived the Orlando Magic in overtime, 116-114.

76ers Host Nuggets for Latter End of Back-to-Back

After a 2 hour flight back from Orland last night the 76ers (41-25) are back home in South Philadelphia, hosting the Denver Nuggets (40-28) for the second night of a back-to-back at The Wells Fargo Center. The away-home back-to-back closer comes on the heels of Sunday’s overtime victory in Orlando, as the Sixers covered a 17-point deficit to win, 116-114.

Monday March 14, 2022: Nuggets comeback to edge Sixers 114-110 despite Joel Embiid's 34 points

Sixers Postgame Live (17:59 Video)

In a battle of MVP frontrunners, Joel Embiid’s Philadelphia 76ers shook off the travel fatigue and bucked their recent trend of poor starts with a strong first quarter against Nikola Jokic’s Denver Nuggets. The Sixers led 37-22 after one, but Denver then ended the half on an 18-4 run to close within five at the break, before quickly regaining the lead early in the second half. In the fourth quarter, it wasn’t the MVP candidates, so much as rookie Bones Hyland stealing the show. Hyland scored 12 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, knocking down some very long threes. Georges Niang’s potential game-tying three-point attempt in the closing seconds was off the mark, and the Sixers fell to the Nuggets in disappointing fashion, 114-110.

Joel Embiid came out of the gates tonight firing, and for all the praise he can heap on Nikola Jokic in press conferences, you could tell he wanted to have a good showing tonight. And he did! Embiid clearly won the on-court minutes against Jokic, as he had his outside shot working tonight (3-of-3 from three), and was able to blow by the reigning MVP off the bounce. He was a little sloppy with his dribble, which led to a couple turnovers, and the refs gave him a rough whistle, which caused him to have to sit out a couple more minutes than usual with foul trouble. Still, despite the team loss, a neutral observer had to consider Embiid the winner of the MVP matchup.

The 76ers Harden Era by the numbers to date since the trade (A 13 game sample size)

55 Games into the 2021-2022 NBA season before the Harden/Simmons trade the 76ers Won/Loss record was 33-22 (60%). They entered the All-Star break on February 17 after a win over the Milwaukee Bucks at 35-23 (60,3%). After resting a strained hamstring for 4 games after the trade James Harden played his 1st game with Joel Embiid and the 76ers on March 25 against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 76ers have played 13 games since Harden 1st took the court in a Sixers' uniform.

Harden has played 11 games for the 76ers who were 9-4 (69.2%) in that stretch and 9-2 (81.8%) in the 11 of those games Harden played. [Harden was rested twice in that stretch: against the Miami Heat away, then later against the Heat at Home. The Heat have yet to see the Sixes when they have both stars on the court].

Joel Embiid was also rested once (with a sore back against Miami at Home on Monday night) in that same 13 game stretch. Embiid has won 8 of 12 (66.7%) since Harden played his 1st game with them. Now 71 games in the 76ers are 44-27 (62.0%) and have marginally improved since their standing after the trade and at the All Star break but are still 2,5 games behind the Heat as the Bucks also still are but the Celtics have moved up 2 Games and are also now 2.5 games behind the Heat while the Bulls, Cavs, Raptors and Nets have lost ground in that period.

The Eastern Conference race to the play-in and playoffs is exceptionally tight. The latest composite NBA Power Rankings rank the 76ers between 4th and 8th. ESPN ranks them 6th, behind Miami, Milwaukee and Boston in the Eastern Conference.

There are 11 regular season games remaining on the 76ers schedule beginning at 10:00 PM EDT tonight in LA against the Lakers.

April 2, 2022: Embiid, Harris help lead 76ers to 144-114 rout of Hornets

Sixers take out losing-skid frustration by dropping 144 points on Hornets

Heading into the weekend, the Philadelphia 76ers have struggled in their last few games. After taking on a tough ten-point loss against the Phoenix Suns last Sunday, the Sixers fell into a small slump. This past Tuesday night, the 76ers hosted the defending champions, the Milwaukee Bucks, and couldn’t keep up with the star power of Giannis Antetokounmpo in the second half. After taking on yet another loss on Tuesday, the Sixers hoped to bounce back two nights later in Detroit against the Pistons. Once again, the Sixers controlled the game for most of the matchup. But once crunch time approached, it all went downhill for Philly.

Going into Saturday afternoon’s game with three-straight losses, the Sixers hosted a red-hot Charlotte Hornets team. While the Hornets aren’t guaranteed to notch a spot in the postseason this year, they are in the NBA’s Play-In Tournament and looking to improve their seeding. Therefore, Saturday’s game had high stakes for both teams, as the Sixers had an opportunity to notch a spot in the playoffs with a victory over Charlotte and a Cleveland Cavaliers loss. Lately, the Sixers haven’t been the best version of themselves, but they came out looking like a completely different team on Saturday afternoon. In the areas where the Sixers have struggled over the last few games, they look much improved as they cruised past Charlotte with a significant win. <<

Joel Embiid wins the NBA scoring title. 1st big to do it Since Shaq in 2000 ...

... and the last center to do so while averaging more than 30 points in a season was Hall of Famer Moses Malone, who averaged 31.1 points as a Houston Rockets while being named MVP during the 1981-82 season.

There are only two players in NBA history who've averaged 40.4 points or more per 100 possessions ( per basketball-reference). One is Embiid. The other is Michael Jeffrey Jordan.

Note: This just in today before the article below was published: Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is out for their season finale with the Cleveland Cavaliers. That means that Joel Embiid will officially win the 2022 scoring title as he is averaging 30.6 points per game. He is the first center to lead the league in scoring since the great Shaquille O’Neal in 2000

Joel Embiid has all but locked up becoming the first center to win an NBA scoring title in 22 seasons. The 76ers star is averaging a league-best 30.573 per game after tallying 41 points in Saturday’s 133-120 victory over the Indiana Pacers at the Wells Fargo Center.

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is the league’s second-leading scorer at 29.88 points. He would have to score 47 points on Sunday against the Cleveland Cavaliers to win the scoring title if Embiid goes scoreless. Antetokounmpo would have to score 77 points to win it if Embiid sits.

Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal was the last center to lead the NBA in scoring, doing so during the 1999-2000 season. The last center to win a scoring title with a more than a 30-point average was Hall of Famer Bob McAdoo, who averaged 31.1 points in 1975-76.

And the last center to average more than 30 points in a season was Hall of Famer Moses Malone, who averaged 31.1 points as a Houston Rockets while being named MVP during the 1981-82 season. Malone was traded to the Sixers after that season, winning a second MVP award and an NBA title during the 1982-83 campaign.

So Embiid is in great company.

“Well. that’s the challenge for next year,” Embiid joked about Malone. “So, next year, I gotta come out and average more than him, but it’s great. Obviously, he’s a legend and it’s great, especially as a big in this era, it’s been a long time. It’s been, what, 40 years? So it hasn’t been done. That’s something that I think is great. I hope guys coming up more, especially bigs coming up, are able to do even more.”

In addition to scoring 41 points, Embiid had 20 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one block on Saturday.

His points came off 14-of-17 shooting (82.3%) from the field and by making 11 of 15 (73.3%) foul shots. Embiid is the fifth player in NBA history to score at least 40 points and grab 20 rebounds while shooting 80% or better from the field, joining John Drew and Hall of Famers Charles Barkley, Wilt Chamberlain, and Bob Pettit.

He also joins Chamberlain and Hall of Famer Allen Iverson as the only Sixers to average at least 30 points in a season.

Embiid is the second NBA player this season with 10 games of at least 30 points and 15 rebounds. He’s averaging 40 points and 15 rebounds over the last four games.

“I think the biggest thing with me is that I feel comfortable with it because I feel like I didn’t force anything,” Embiid said. ”I feel like I just played within the flow of the offense.

“Before we had James [Harden], obviously, I had a much larger role in the offense whether it was playmaking or scoring. Since we added him, I try to share the load, which has been great. Great stats and I guess I’m happy about it.”

Maxey the three-point shooter

Tyrese Maxey has extended his streak of games with multiple three-pointers to five after going 2-for-6 against the Pacers. The Sixers’ second-year guard is shooting 49.6% from three since the All-Star break, which ranks first in the league over that time for players with at least 120 attempts. <<

Why Stephen A voted for Joel Embiid for NBA MVP ... and thoughts on James Harden (First Take)

Shephen A On Embiid (2:06 video) ...

"I had to give my vote to Joel Embiid," Smith said on ESPN's First Take on Wednesday. "I understood there was a slight hiccup once James Harden arrived, so I paid attention to that. And in those first few games that James Harden arrived, [Embiid] still had 34, 37, 27, and two 22 point games. Last 15 games or so: 43, 27, 35, 34, 35, 32, had a 21 point game, right? 30, 27, 37, 29, 37, 29, 44, 45, 30, 41. That's what Joel Embiid is doing. Sixers, limited bench, top 10 defense. We know [Nikola] Jokic don't play defense like Joel Embiid."

Smith said he agonized over the difficult decision, waiting until two hours before the deadline to cast his vote. Smith acknowledged the excellence of the other top MVP contenders in Giannis Antetokounmpo, Devin Booker, and the aforementioned Jokic.

According to VegasInsider.com, Jokic—who won the award last year—is the current favorite at -380, while Embiid is listed at +265. Antetokounmpo is +800, while Booker is a distant fourth at +7500.

Maximizing the Sixers’ Embiid Harden & Rotation Question

msn.com and si.com

The run up to every postseason tends to spring different anxieties on the Sixers. The most prevalent have typically been linked to a rotation that’s forever scrutinized and rarely ironed out. Most teams encounter a similar dilemma—what is a rotation if not the most advantageous way to organize and exploit a roster’s collective talent?—but Philadelphia’s has, annually, been a source of particular consternation.

In years past, everything revolved around the need to answer a fundamental question: Should Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons be staggered or play a majority of their minutes together?

• Before Philly traded for Jimmy Butler back in November 2018, the former was extremely popular. Using input from his analytics staff, Brett Brown aggressively staggered Simmons and Embiid and avoided pretty much ever having fewer than two starters on the court at the same time. Philadelphia’s starting five outscored opponents by a whopping 11.4 points per 100 possessions during a magical 52-win 2017–18 season, but it also accounted for only 25.8% of their total minutes, which ranked 19th in the league.

• The following year they acquired Butler, whose elite pick-and-roll playmaking and aversion to outside shots duplicated some of Simmons’s on-court persona without rectifying enough of his shortcomings. It came to a head during their second-round series against the Raptors, when Embiid and Butler began spending more time in lineups that didn’t include Simmons. (The Sixers were very good when all three played, but their offense went to another level when Simmons wasn’t on the court.)

• Two years ago, during Al Horford and Josh Richardson’s disastrous stint, Brown tried to solve an unfixable dilemma by shifting Simmons from point guard to power forward, moving Horford to the bench and inserting Shake Milton into the starting five. In theory, as Embiid’s backup, Horford could come in and space the floor for Simmons while Joel rested. In reality, Simmons injured his knee and the Sixers were swept by Boston in the first round.

• In Doc Rivers’s first year at the helm, the Sixers embraced a completely different strategy. Instead of staggering Simmons and Embiid, their starting lineup spent more time together than any other in the league, while five-man units that had no starters in them made up 15% of all Philadelphia’s minutes (which was more than any other team). Both groupings helped the Sixers grab the No. 1 seed, and so long as Embiid and Simmons shared the court they were dominant in the playoffs, sporting a +17.74 net rating. The problem was that every other iteration struggled, and Philly was abysmal when both sat at the same time, getting outscored by 9.21 points per 100 possessions in 122 minutes. (These numbers don’t include Game 5 in the first round, which Embiid missed.)

Now, history is (sort of) repeating itself; Embiid and James Harden are a more compatible basketball partnership than Embiid and Simmons, but the same question remains: How do the Sixers get the most out of their star duo?

Should Rivers separate his two Hall of Famers and keep at least one on the floor at all times? Should he extend their playing time together and then brace himself for whatever comes in those non–Harden-Embiid minutes? If split, when should certain members of their supporting cast play? Is Tyrese Maxey maximized (sorry) beside Embiid and without Harden, next to both or by himself?

Sometimes having an unsettled rotation can be perceived as a flex. The Clippers are a perfect example. They can mix and match a dozen players, embrace just about any style of play and take pride in their own unpredictability. It doesn’t matter who starts or who finishes.

This isn’t quite the situation Philadelphia finds itself in. This roster is thin. Behind Embiid, Harden, Maxey and sometimes Tobias Harris, their role players are mostly one-dimensional (i.e., defenders who can’t shoot, shooters who can’t defend and nobody who can put it on the floor and create for others).

Life won’t get any easier over the next couple of weeks, with a starting five that won’t be their normal starting five. Matisse Thybulle chose not to get vaccinated against a highly contagious disease that has killed millions of people and thus is not allowed to enter Canada. After starting every game from January 25 to April 5, Thybulle could not play when the Sixers lost to the Raptors on April 7, and then Rivers chose to start Danny Green instead of Thybulle in the next game, a 13-point win over the Pacers.

In 323 minutes together during the regular season, Harden, Embiid, Maxey, Harris and Thybulle outscored opponents by 20.2 points per 100 possessions, a juggernaut’s number. Their offense and defense were both almost four points better than the league’s best offense (Utah) and best defense (Boston). Thybulle is a 30.7% three-point shooter over the past two seasons, but his ball screens and baseline cuts worked fine enough complementing everybody else. On defense, his duties were a bit more critical.

According to Bball Index, Thybulle spent more time guarding the opponent’s highest-usage offensive weapon than any other defender in the league. (Thybulle’s “matchup difficulty” graded out as 100.0, tying him with Thunder wing Lu Dort.) His value is against opposing starters. Thybulle jumps passing lanes, harasses elite pick-and-roll ballhandlers and, from all the havoc he wreaks on defense, had an extremely positive impact on Philly’s transition offense.

It’s not the largest sample size, but over the 74 minutes Green played with the other four starters instead of Thybulle, Philly’s offense maintained while its defensive rating slipped from 102.1 to 111.0. It’s something to keep an eye on if, for the sake of consistency, Rivers decides to make Green his permanent starting two guard.

Rivers also has to work through an increasingly contentious predicament regarding his backup center, in which the clearest options are DeAndre Jordan (owner of a -13.6 net point differential), Paul Millsap (washed up several months ago), Paul Reed (a 22-year-old who has not played 500 total minutes in his career) and Charles Bassey (a rookie currently dealing with a strained shoulder).

There’s a non-zero chance Philadelphia goes small when Embiid needs to rest (the 6'7" Georges Niang is one choice at the five) and simply hopes to space Toronto out and outscore them for a few minutes. But the Sixers are bad enough on the defensive glass as it is, and the Raptors maul the offensive boards. Small ball may not be tenable in this matchup.

Beyond that relatively minor blemish, though, Rivers has spent the past few weeks tinkering with different lineups, searching for the best ways to amplify his two stars without burning them out. For a few weeks after the trade deadline, Harden and Embiid were staggered quite a bit, with Harden exiting games midway through the first and third quarters so he could check back in a few minutes later, spell Embiid and start the second/fourth quarter leading his own five-man unit.

When it became clear that their biggest advantage was with Harden and Embiid both in at the same time, Rivers stretched Harden’s initial stints in the first and second half, then let him and Embiid rest together. Philly’s net rating with their two best players was +15.9 with an obscene 122.7 offensive rating. Meanwhile, staggering was a disaster, largely thanks to holes in the roster. The Sixers were outscored by 13.96 points per 100 possessions when Embiid played without Harden and outscored by 10.96 points per 100 possessions when Harden played without Embiid.

On March 23, in a five-point win against a Lakers team that didn’t have Anthony Davis or LeBron James, Embiid played all but a couple of his 35 minutes with Harden. The same strategy held two nights later in a blowout win against the Clippers. But a week later, after Rivers used that same rotation in losses against the Suns and Bucks, the hybrid bench/starter units that didn’t include Embiid or Harden were temporarily scrapped, with Harden again playing the second and fourth quarters without Embiid. Clearly, no resolution has been made.

The best option—in my opinion—requires faith in Maxey, a burgeoning Most Improved Player candidate who’s shooting 42.7% from behind the three-point line. So far, his best moments have come as a complementary spark, with only four assists in four games’ worth of playing time without Embiid or Harden. He doesn’t need to be Chris Paul, but if Maxey can keep Philly’s offense afloat as a primary ballhandler in reserve-heavy units it will take some pressure off Embiid and Harden. The positive ripple effects would be huge. (In a small sample size, the Sixers have a positive point differential when Maxey plays without Embiid and Harden.)

The downside with that route is not getting to unleash Maxey as often beside Harden and Embiid, but those two sans the second-year guard have generated a [puts sunglasses on] 140.2 offensive rating, with Shake Milton moonlighting as a tertiary scoring option. It’s all a fascinating puzzle with countless permutations and no one right answer. Some paths are better than others, of course. And with no more time to experiment, it’s on Rivers and his coaching staff to find the best fit before a once-promising Sixers season goes up in flames. <<
