The Fed cannot possibly not care about the stock market. Too much of the US economy is dependent on the stock prices. Lyn Alden had an article about how the US enacted a bunch of policies to siphon off the capital into stock market (which is why so many foreign companies are listed on the US stock exchanges). A side effect of having so much tied to the market is that the Fed has to support it.
