RDRT has been talking about how critical it is for RDRT/SMI(their Japanese venture) to qual for the next gen QNTM head, a 2.8GB family, not a 2.5GB

I've seen several references to the 2.5GB QNTM head on these threads, but no place else. Seems to be that it would be silly to produce a 2.5GB family. Every PC OEM basically supplies(and sources) the same DD capacities, look at you Sunday Ads - 3.2, 4.3, 6.4, 8.4. All DD makers are after the mainstream OEM distribution. Most OEMs source 2, maybe 3, suppliers for the products. If I were a DD maker I'd produce one head family and try to sell it to every OEM- that means follow the trends. The trick is to achieve time to market, become the primary supplier to OEMs and you win.

There are exceptions I believe like the bleeding edge SEG Big Bear 9.1GB DD, or the Bigfoot products. Those go for a niche market, not the mainstream.
