The book to which you refer is a part of the Peterson (as in Roger Tory Peterson, ornithologist) Field Guide series. I still have a copy from the late 50's when I was in high school and rockhounding myself. It goes into excellent detail on mineral identification: appearance, crystallography, hardness, "blowpipe testing" etc. and is fully illustrated. I have found my old mineral collecting hobby and the info I absorbed from Frederick Pough's excellent field guide most useful in assisting my understanding of the running geological commentary on these gold and silver threads.

It is available in nature stores, if not on the web.
