....your fire tax must be incorporated within your town tax.........generally for VOLUNTEER fire depts, the fire tax should be no more than $1/$1K of property valuation.......A very well run volunteer dept could be as low as $.5/$1K valuation.............thus the fire tax on a $300K home would be somewhere between $150-$300 per year. This is the $$ required to run the dept(apparatus/ equipment, fuel, bldg upkeep etc.)......for unionized paid depts, it will be many times more...... as in general between 80% to 90% of paid unionized fire dept budgets go for salaries and benefits....in my town you would pay over $1350year. ..In NY, fire fighters make more than teachers with advanced degrees as fire dept commissions give away the farm at every contract negotiation.....a firefighter in my town will retire making OVER $150K and with $100+K pension with fully paid lifetime medical benefits...Idiot New Yorkers don't bother to vote in fire commission elections so hand picked union stooges have a cart blanche to fleece the taxpayers....and they laugh hysterically while doing it...... as they say.... much easier to dupe the public than to convince them they were duped...this could not be more true .
