Watch for the next three Wednesdays of FT. The semiconductor industry is "this month's focus" which means that every Wednesday during February they will continue to highlight this area.

Missed it! The irony there is that it looks like Java will be a big presence in the Information Appliance category an area that Gosling and his group were initially targeting (actually it was something specific - can't remember - maybe a STB?) when they first conceived of Java... I think though that in this case (Information Appliances) first that fast PicoJava chip needs to be be built - certain things were done (I think one of the big ones was standardizing the size of the basic data types) that pretty much ensure that Java will not match the speed of languages optimized for particular machines. But I think they are making good progress. And they've cut down the hype - most important!
