If Ukraine, or NATO, decided to invade Russia (for whatever reason), I have no doubt Putin would drop a nuke. So I don’t get that Russia ever really feared for its security I get that. But do we really want to make them do it? Pressing a dangerous opponent to an extreme ain't wise. Using a nuke - even a small, “tactical” one - would break the great taboo which existed since Hiroshima. You nuke someone - and you’re left to wonder - will they nuke you back? And if you think so, wouldn’t it be smarter to “retaliate” first, without waiting to get hit? Things may blow big in a blink. And even if, per chance, it stops there, you’ll be a SHPOS (subhuman piece of sh*t) for the next 100 years. Bad business.

My guess is that Russia isn't worried about Ukraine or NATO invading. My guess is that Russia doesn't want the endless guerilla bullshit. Clift notes analysis, without getting into the Ukraine weeds too far. Security.....I don't fear Mexico invading but what's going on at our border doesn't look like security. Similar situation.
