I think for today's Russians, running an empire would be too much trouble - who wants to keep subduing people who hate you? These days real wealth and power are not in land and plunder, but in having better technology - and more money. Interestingly, very many countries go through a period of empire building - Rome, of course, but also the UK, the Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, France and many others. Even Lithuania - a tiny country today - a few centuries ago had an empire from the Baltic to the Black Sea, controlling most of what’s todays Belarus, much of Russia and Ukraine.

I think today's Russians would like to be like the Americans of old - work, business, make a good living, nice house, cars, vacations. But - no wokeness.
