The explanation is - rightly or wrongly, Russia sees Ukraine's geopolitical stance as something of existential importance - and is willing to fight. To everyone else, it’s a matter of “maybe this, maybe that” - plus bunches of abstract principles and bored bureaucrats, only interested in careers.

What is shocking to me is that Zelensky *really* thought NATO will come to his help. Either that, or he’s simply looking to get more money, weapons - and diplomatic support. In other words, he’s already negotiating.
