I only have one workgroup Zeusnet. The name of the compaq computer is Zeus1 And the name of the Aptiva computer is Zeus2.

The IRQ 3 was the com2 serial port. I disabled it in the bios and then assigned it to the 3COM card. That got rid if the 1800 PCI error message on boot up but I still had a yellow mark on the card in the device manager indicating a conflict. Windows said it was unable to tell me what the conflict was. The 3com literature indicated that if you have ISA and PCI (who doesn't) you might have to move the IRQ higher up(away from the PCI IRQ)? I used 11 because it was the highest and nothing else was using it. Then when I booted the device manager said everything was ok.

Anyway, that is all history. I took the ISA card back and picked up a 3com 3c905-tx card for the PCI slot. This one is for RJ-45 connections only but it looks like that is what I will be using.

I installed the card and it shows up in the device manager as ok. Although now I have a yellow mark on the SCSI host adapter which I am not using right now so it doesn't bother me at the moment.

Now the network doesn't work at all. Neither computer sees the other one. Zeus still sees itself but when I click on the network neighborhood in zeus2 I get the same message..not able to browse the network.

I also get the same questions about overwriting newer files with older files during the PnP driver installation process.

The 3com literature says I should use the latest BIOS for my computer...Now I have to upgrade BIOS just to get a simple peer to peer network working??!!

I would like to try to get the WIN 95 updated. If I buy the full version, not the upgrade will I be able to install the new version without reformating the harddrive?

I don't think the driver installation process is working write, zeus2 doesn't seem to know how to search the network for itself or the other machine

Thanks for you help

Home network, should you or shouldn't you :)

Now I am back where I was last night. Zeus1 (the compaq computer with a card in the ISA slot) see's itself and Zeus2 and I can transfer files back and forth, I can access everything on both computers from zeus1. Does this mean the cabling is OK? Does it also mean that both cards are functioning properly?

What I did was remove the device in device manager (talking about zeus2 with a card in the PCI slot). I booted zeus2 and went through the PnP process again. This time when it asked for the Win 95 disc I gave it the Win 95 disc from the Compaq computer (zeus1) because it has more recent Win 95 software on it. This time I got no messages about new vs old.

But, Zeus2 still does not see itself or zeus1. The error message is "unable to browse the network..the network is not accessible and refers me to the network trouble shooting guide. I went through the trouble shooting process which is the same as your points ie same workgroup etc. In the end the troubleshooter said it couldn't help me :(

Am I using NETBEUI or TCP/IP as both are in the list? I have not set any TCP\IP settings yet. If I give specific settings could this help?

Upgrading Win95 to OSR2

Not a straight forward procedure. Here are several methods ...

You may experience that you are prompted to upgrade to OSR2 when you insert the OSR2 CDROM into an non-OSR2(Win95) system. However, if you choose to do so, it won't work. You'll receive an error message a few screens into the"upgrade." Use one of the methods described below instead.
