Great article - but at the end he joins the crowd by psychoanalyzing Putin and imputing to him motivations he may or may not have. I think the way to see Putin is simply at face value - a typical “president for life” - but, generally well liked by the citizenry, and capable of channeling their thoughts and concerns. If Putin dies or is fired - I expect that the next guy would be doing the same. No President of Russia would accept Ukraine as part of nato - which would destabilize their world. And ours too, actually.
