The combination of the sanctions and SWIFT block makes it hard for anyone other than China to trade with Russia.

I share your concern about the spill back into the western financial markets. Expect to hear the Fed announcing they stand ready to provide liquidity to the world (not just the US) should there be be a need. If they decide to preempt that need, the market will likely rally.

A large nation is being abruptly removed from the global economy. That means some assumptions about future economic conditions, will not happen. Anyone who made a leveraged bet, based on those assumptions, may suddenly find themselves facing a margin call.
