in the non- covid world, I live in China. I got booted out of there 17mos ago. I left my wife behind. at that time, in addition to covid, the HongKong fiasco was playing out. I will say one thing about the Chinese, 100% insular thinking & sensitive to criticism & don't mention democracy. There is no such thing as the 'google world'.. Chinese censorship is 100%. If Russia is in a bind, does one realistically think China pays premium for whatever because they feel for Putin? China has the money, they've got the guns. They will run herd if they can get away with it. Russia is a paper tiger to China... just another cheap fix for resource plundering. China loses if Russia over- plays their European hand.. the Chinese have projects & money here, but their goodwill has been getting tarnished here in Albania and the Balkans. But I'm thinking the Russian oligarchs are smiling.. they have a ready real estate market laundering their monies here. Montenegro is an example.
