The invention of photo camera pushed painting into the abstract and modernist genre. There was less incentive to paint a realistic image if you could snap one with a camera. The same is true for our clothes and buildings and so on. By making it easy, technology removed the incentive to for doing it great.

I get how good enough kills great. I get how there is no point in bragging about a fancy dress if it can be ready made. But the problem is that in the past societies moved on to other areas they deemed as worthy challenges. But that has not happened for almost a century.
