Update on Indonesia.

Some good news ... Indonesia getting public support from Japan and Brunei regarding some type of financial rescue plan. Also strong military presence in the streets appears effective at keeping rioting at bay.

Some bad news ... inflation is going to be severe (recent official announcements that gas will rise 25%, airport fees 400%) which will make doing business there more expensive. More ominous, though is the ongoing violence directed at the ethnic Chinese who are the majority of business operators (ie. the easy scapegoat for the average man in the street). Someone recently posed a disturbing question, one I had not factored in to the equation, asking how long China was likely to stand idly by if the violence against their brethren continues.

As for ANZ in Indo....
The COW's will make/break the Indo play. Given the region 's political/social/economic situation it's basically a coin toss right now. Not likely to be resolved until after Soeharto's re-election mid March.

Just some food for thought.
