Off topic -- site for tax discussions?

I went long against a short position last year for a few days
(lost my shirt anyway) and need to know if it's an
"appreciated position" (the IRS does not defined this
very well) that I need to handle specially.

Is there a site where we can talk about this kind of thing?

Re Quicken 98 Deluxe. Love it. I had some initial hassles getting Schwab transactions set up. But now, I get all transactions downloaded into my Quicken software just by dialling up the web. Also delayed quotes -- so the portfolio is updated every day.

There are still some bugs to work out regarding the portfolio tracking. I have a $10,000 short position that Quicken is calculating as a $10,000 gain, for example, even though its about even.

However, it sure beats typing in the transactions by hand. And as they get the bugs fixed, you can download software updates via the web.

Caution: only some online brokers support Q98. Check with the Quicken.com web site to see if your broker does.

Bottom line: it ain't perfect, but it beats anything else I've seen.
