We need to drill! We need to open ANWAR. We need to approve offshore drilling permits. We need to build nuclear plants. We need to be an exporter of natural gas to Europe.

But global warming

And racism

I can only speak for myself. The issue of nato expansion was on the table for 30 years, ever since the collapse of the USSR. It’s not a new issue. Why is Ukraine neutrality so critical from their point of view? I guess, because they’re not comfortable with having a 1,200 mile border with a “defense” block that they see as potential adversaries. They were given many promises over the years, but for the most part the western side just laughed them out of the room. They were treated like a shithole. So, they became pissed - and waited for an opportune moment, when the West is having a bad period - and decided, it’s now or never.

2 more points. The informations superhighway makes this situation particularly dangerous. The entire planet is almost completely united. People lose reason - and push, essentially, for a nuclear war. That’s crazy. In the past few thousand years that region knew hundreds of wars. It’s not like America. The problem is - if Western leadership is pushed to escalate, no one is likely to live another day to deal with these issues in the future.

Which is exactly the thing that worries me (I’m just an old retired guy, and ALL I can do about this is worry). I want this shit storm to pass. What’s happening over there is horrible. War is horrible. But, wars always happened, and likely always will. It’s just the stupid human nature. This is why we keep a powerful military - do discourage anyone from attacking us. Call me a coward if you must - but I do not want to see a nuclear war.

These steps will send the right message to China eyeing Taiwan.

The world had better hope that there is no bloody war in Taiwan. Pouring Russian vodka down the drain is one thing, but Taiwan dominates the manufacture of semiconductors. Anyone who thinks there's a chip shortage now had better hope Taiwan doesn't blow up..

cnbc.com

...Taiwan dominates the foundry market, or the outsourcing of semiconductor manufacturing. Its contract manufacturers together accounted for more than 60% of total global foundry revenue last year, according to data by Taipei-based research firm TrendForce.

Much of Taiwan’s dominance can be attributed to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co or TSMC, the world’s largest foundry that counts major technology firms such as Apple, Qualcomm and Nvidia as its clients. TSMC accounted for 54% of total foundry revenue globally last year, TrendForce data showed.

Semiconductors are critical components that power electronics from computers and smartphones to the brake sensors in cars. The production of chips involves a complex network of firms that design or make them, as well as those that supply the technology, materials and machinery to do so...
