Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 793964 Trumpenfreude for Twitterdonsurber.blogspot.com Last year, when Twitter banned Donald Trump in an act of censorship, the media cheered. CNN ran a column , "What if Twitter had banned Trump sooner?" It was by Dean Obeidallah, a lawyer, who concluded, "I fully defend the free exchange of ideas. But it's abundantly clear that social media companies need to act far more swiftly in the future when people -- especially public figures with immense followings -- use their platforms to spread dangerous misinformation. If not, we may see even more deadly attacks by those radicalized by the lies of morally bankrupt social media users." No opposing view was showcased. Vox said , "Kicking people off social media isn't about free speech." And war is peace. The New York Times said , "In Pulling Trump’s Megaphone, Twitter Shows Where Power Now Lies." And as usual, NYT was wrong. CBS reported on Friday , "Amid a crackdown on demonstrators and independent media outlets, the Kremlin blocked access to Facebook and Twitter on Friday. "Russian telecommunications regulator, Roskomnadzor, said the decision to block Facebook was made in response to the platform's alleged discrimination against Russian media, citing 26 cases since October 2020." Gee, that is too bad, ain't it? Twitter is suspended on its own suspensions. The Facebook ban may cost Schmuckerberg -- excuse me, Zuckerberg -- some money. I wonder if Vox will tell us that kicking social media off the Internet isn't about free speech. But wait. There's more. Twitter and Facebook are not the only ones being Russianed. The same news media that failed to stand up for Trump is now being stared down by Vlad. Hamas-shielding AP reported from Dusseldorf, Germany , "Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday signed a bill introducing a prison sentence of up to 15 years for those spreading information that goes against the Russian government’s narrative on the war in Ukraine. "The bill criminalizing the intentional spreading of what Russia deems to be fake reports about the war was quickly rubber-stamped by both houses of the Kremlin-controlled parliament earlier in the day." The dateline lets AP off the hook from being prosecuted under the new law. BBC, Bloomberg and CNN are shutting down their bureaus to avoid the law. Their call. They don't always stand up to censorship. From 1991 to 2003, CNN kept its bureau open in Baghdad by acquiescing to Saddam Hussein's demands. No one in the media batted an eye when CNN finally admitted it as the Hussein regime fell . So really, I don't want to hear media complaints about Putin, who may or may not be as bad as Hussein. I ain't a farmer but I hear you reap what you sow. And this crop of Trumpenfreude tastes mighty good.
