Alan,

If you look at this FC info on the StorageTek site, the SAN diagrams are almost identical to the ones you will see on the Sun site - with a central FC switch connected to hubs and servers:

network.com

It has all of the usual information on FC. My guess would be that StorageTek is not making their own switches. If they have a deal with a switch company (like the Brocade rumor) the switch on the diagram is theirs.

My guess about IBM is that they want to try to make their proprietary system as interop as possible and to sell it like FC in storage systems. In this scenario, I haven't seen anything to suggest it is as fast as FC - now or in the future, but I may have missed something.

<<Brocade has been rumored as the winner of some STK biz>>

Alan, George,

If this rumor is true, then the rumor that Brocade has its Silkworm FC-AL port module available now must also be true. You would think that Brenda would be bragging about it if that were so. It must be under evaluation still. Pass the salt, s'il vous plait.

Re: IBM & STK

I believe the agreement renewal notice was in response to DOJ clearing of STK & IBM incestuous relationship, and to reassure IBM clients that their installed SSA based automated tape libraries would continue to be supported by STK. Perhaps it can be inferred from this that IBM will be likely to ride the FC storage tide on STK's FC vessels, upgrading their legacy SSA clients that need it to STK FC? They need to do something to counter EMC which whipped them on ESCON.

Douglas

Alan,

I had a post in response to yours went to never never land. Anyway, STK is more of a storage and tape system provider. Servers companies more or less are in the driver seat. What I mean is IT managers looking to install new systems would start looking for servers first. Servers companies would OEMed disk and tape systems if they don't have them. In STK's case, because of their status, I would consider them a 'Tier 1' OEM prospect. IMO FC-AL is a requirement for them also. I still haven't heard officially Brocade has this functionality. What does this mean? Either Brocade changes their approach to keeping everything quiet or they are losing ground to Ancor. I love to think it's the latter. The price action of Ancor lately suggests we are in for some positive development for a change.
