They are cultivating this image of Putin sitting in a basement somewhere, alone, not talking to anyone, deciding everything according to his own personal mad whims. I have no idea how things get decided within Russia but I suspect there are more than one person discussing it.

Agree. Was saying this for years - if Putin is gone, the next one will do the same thing. The idea that all states are the same (I think it originates from the Westphalian agreement) is true - but not in every way. It is literally in no one’s interests for nato to add 1500 miles of additional border with Russia.

Ukraine as an independent nation could focus on fighting corruption, on becoming a law abiding nation - which would attract investment and bring prosperity. Much better.
