They were supposed to get some sort of an autonomy as the result of the Minsk agreements, but those results were ignored by Ukraine and the West. So, the only way they could assert their autonomy was to fight for it. At this point, after years of fighting with many thousands of people dead - they want to be independent, separate entities.
