TraderRick: If you use the SOES button to buy or sell it must be bought/sold from a market maker(MM from now on) It cannot be bought /sold from an ECN(Bloomberg,Tera Nova, Instinet, Spears, Island) To buy/sell from an ECN you must use Selectnet or possibly the Island button(depending on what system you use) You can also use Selectnet to buy/sell 1000 +/- shares from MM's.

Most broker's system's are setup to stop you from screwing up. Unfortunately some trades still get screwed up anyways. That's usually when your broker will get a call from another MM asking him what the @!$#% he's doing. Brokers don't like to be embarrassed this way so avoid screwing up at all costs;))

Yes the maximum through SOES is typically 1000 shares although it does vary(not much though)

yes you could use various systems to buy/sell more stock within the 5 minute rule.

Don't spend alot of time second guessing MM's - typically it is difficult or impossible to know why or what anyone is really doing on the bid/offer.

Check out the thread " From The Trading Desk" for information on trade execution(I recommend you start from post #1)
