Thanks for pointing that out - I had neglected all the tax implications and your point - the AMT - most likely figured in to many of these stock sales.

Somehow we need to repeal all AMT tax laws!

Carter,

...AMT of 28% would be levied on most of the unrealized gain in the year of exercise. This requires a lot of cash!

The company I work for makes you pay at time of exercise. Ouch!
