I grew up in Montreal QC... At 10 we moved to the North shore .. ( am just shy of 66) Pierrefonds specifically from the city but still on island... Pierrefonds means Rocky bottom BTW :) .. anyway we used to fish here ... en.wikipedia.org and a bit downstream where it slowed at the shoreline a bit.. we used to walk out and fish off long sewer lines .. In those days and sadly until pretty recently raw sewage was dumped.. especially as the sewage and storm systems were one and the same.. .. actually same reason in summer thunder downpours before the burbs our toilets and tubs would bubble up with God only know who's defecation ... was gross.. where it slowed at the shore... the crap was not carried away too quickly to become somebody else's issue... amazing how many fix still thrived...

fishing we would pull up tampon inserters, condoms.. all manner of crud and detritus ...

just saying ... it is a process...
