S.Korea Maxon Elec To Sell $150M Phones To Nortel

SEOUL (Dow Jones)--South Korea's Maxon Electronics (Q.MAX) said Monday it will provide US$150 million worth of mobile phone terminals to Northern Telecom Ltd. (NT), or Nortel, under an original equipment manufacturing basis.

According to Maxon, it will provide 500,000 units of 800 megahertz and 1,900 megahertz code division multiple access wireless loop terminals to the Canadian concern through its U.S. subsidiary Maxon America Inc. for the next three years beginning April.

The terminals, said to be the smallest among CDMA terminals and to last longer with its backup batteries compared with conventional mobile phones, will be sold under the brand name of 'Proximity', Maxon said.

'The latest contract will enable Maxon to have a firm stand in the global CDMA WLL market,' said a Maxon official.

Maxon also hopes to sell 700,000 mobile phones to Southeast Asian countries this year based on projections that demand in the region will reach 1 million units in 1998.

'We are currently in talks with companies from such countries as Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand to sell our products,' he said.

The Korean company makes various communications products such as two-way radios, mobile phone terminals for CDMA and personal communications system as well as pagers.

Shares of Maxon Electronics closed the day at KRW14,500, up KRW600, on volume of 79,080 shares.

Nortel designs, makes and distributes telecommunications equipment and products.

Ramsey:

You need to set a time to be at Jasmine so that those of us that can't take a whole morning off of work but could do the lunch know when to be there.
