Putin is walking a tightrope. He couldn't commit a large force to do away with the Ukies in fast order because he has NATO forces near his border and he has to be ready for them if they attack. Already it was announced in The Army Times that we now have 90,000 men on the "eastern front". The UK has been sending large amounts of weaponry into Estonia. Is that a cover for supplying their own forces should NATO decide to attack?

The winds of war are blowing briskly right now and I'm sure that Putin, being no dummy, is making sure he can fight everyone if need be. He said he was approaching it that way from the very start.

Now that is just an objective assessment.
