It's an interesting point you made that the USSR was drawing lines strategically to dilute Ukraine nationalism. Didn't work out so well for the Soviets, Russia, and Ukraine. Their Experts™ weren't thinking of the citizens. Gets complicated when the citizens have suddenly been put on the other side of an arbitrary divide. That article from 2014, when combined with the history found in the more recent Stockman article and explanations from The Duran, gives a great overview of how The Experts™ and The Retrogrades™ (coined by Alex Christoforou) have messed up Ukraine.
