I enjoy your writing Maurice - always a different take on things with a bit of humor and pointed wit.

I suppose where we differ is seeing it as a one way street in regard to the UN and Russia. Was it America or the U.N's fault, Russia was not welcomed after the fall of the Soviet Union, or was it both?

When people have been invaded and subjugated behind the Iron Curtain, literally killed for trying to leave for decades, it's naïve to think when the Berlin Wall fell everyone would immediately embrace and trust at the level necessary to share military resources and become a member of NATO.

Should there have been more effort? Probably, but the fault doesn't solely lie on members of the Alliance and the U.S. Europeans nations should be taking the lead on such matters, but they never really embraced NATO themselves, having been happy to spend less than agreed to for defense, while pushing the U.S. to shoulder the burden. My preference, the US should get out of Europe and let European countries figure things out.

Latest reports I've read Russia is down to 140 million people. With the exception of nuclear weapons, they are a declining power, as evidence by the dysfunctional invasion of Ukraine. Like most dictatorial regimes, they appear to not care a hoot for the soldiers they toss into the battlefield, nor the civilians who are indiscriminately killed by their outdated bombing methods.

I realize it irritates many the world over, but MAD has been proven to work to keep the peace. Is there any doubt that if Ukraine had one or two nuclear missiles, Russia would not have considered attacking the country? They should have kept a few, just as other economically stressed nations have such as Pakistan.

Yes, Ukraine is corrupt, so is Russia - maybe more so.

Here's a good example. China wants to form an alliance with the Solomon Islands. Now look at how the paranoid Aussies and New Zealanders are reacting with the US. If China one day attacks New Zealand, should we blame them for not embracing China when they had the chance?
