3Com Networking Solutions to Connect Over 80,000 Massachusetts Educators to the Internet
Ubiquitous 3Com Technology Creates a 56K Capable Connection 100% of the Time
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 1998--3Com(R) Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS - news) today announced that it is taking part in an effort to provide Internet access to all educators in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as part of MassEd.Net.

MassEd.Net, announced today by Governor A. Paul Cellucci, is a new Internet Service Provider (ISP) provided by the Massachusetts Department of Education exclusively for more than 80,000 Massachusetts educators. MassEd.Net uses 3Com's Total Control(TM) remote access concentrator to facilitate access to the wealth of educational resources available for educators on the Internet.

To inaugurate the program a computer, equipped with a 3Com U.S. Robotics(R) 56K faxmodem furnished by 3Com, was donated to a teacher at the Woodrow Wilson School in Dorchester, Mass. Governor Cellucci also presented the teacher with the MassEd.Net software that will provide the Internet connection.

As a special MassEd.Net offer, 3Com is making its U.S. Robotics 56K faxmodem with x2(TM) technology available to all Massachusetts educators at a discounted rate. Since the new ISP uses 3Com's x2 technology exclusively, educators are ensured a 56K-capable connection 100% of the time. Additionally, the U.S. Robotics 56K faxmodem includes a guaranteed free upgrade to the ITU 56K standard.

''3Com applauds the Commonwealth of Massachusetts commitment to the professional growth of its educators,'' commented David Katz, 3Com's global education industry manager. ''Technology can open up new and exciting learning opportunities for students, but teachers must be prepared to harness those opportunities in order to create truly successful 21st century classrooms.''

3Com is committed to providing the education community with enterprise-wide networking solutions that allow students access to a wide array of learning resources which will help prepare them for what they will encounter in their working lives. 3Com has been involved with a number of educational initiatives, providing the equipment, design, installation, volunteers and teacher training to network and provide Internet access for thousands of schools. 3Com initiated the Massachusetts Liberty Network (MLN) project in Boston, and its surrounding towns, providing more than $3.1 million in resources to network and provide Internet access for almost 190 schools and libraries.

About MassEd.Net

Unlimited local access to the Internet is free to educators through MassEd.Net for a trial period through September 1998. After September, there will be a $25 annual fee with no additional charges, providing average savings of more than $200 compared to commercial services. This unlimited Internet access is available only to educators who are employed by a Massachusetts public school or public agency offering early childhood, K-12, vocational/technical or adult basic education.

JavaNet, a New England ISP will provide the Internet access and toll-free technical support and Global NAPs, a competitive local exchange carrier based in Quincy, Mass., will provide the telecommunications services.
