There are a number of very interesting articles in Byte/Feb, particularly this one...

byte.com

...discussing the fragmentation Microsoft is causing IN IT'S OWN CUSTOMER BASE! After the release of WinSh_t98 and NT 5.0, there will be "seven not-fully-comapatible versions of Windows in wide use". Would seem to me that as these fragmentations become more apparent it should make it easier for competitors to specifically target these customers and start taking them away from Microsoft. The question is can Microsoft's marketing gurus continue to fool all (well, at least most) of the people all of the time?

It is interesting that people who don't 'read' history, tend to 'repeat' history! As long as management assumes that 'they' have the answers, because 'they' are management, 'they' will continue to make the same mistakes, based on a slick presentation! MSFT has the resources to 'correct' the problem, and you can bet that BG is aware of the problems. If the problems aren't cleared in the real near future, MSFT will take the 'hit', and you can bet that some at MSFT will be 'looking' for employment! ( I wonder if 'they' will still get their 'stock' bonuses for a 'screw-up' of this size?

Interesting thought!
