EchoStar Eyes Wireless Platform
Feb. 11, 1998

EchoStar may be planning a move into wireless, reportedly preparing for an LMDS auction at the Federal Communications Commission next week and forming a partnership with a Denver-based company to bid on licenses.

According to trade reports, EchoStar has formed a company called Alta Wireless with Denver business owner Phanie Sundheim. EchoStar is a minority partner in the company.

Alta Wireless is one of 150 companies signed up for the LMDS auction at the FCC on Feb. 18, applying to bid on every available license. LMDS could give the company a second option to deliver local stations.

EchoStar officials weren't available for comment.

*** NOTE: Alta Wireless made an upfront payment of $6.2M to bid in the LMDS auction.
