Texas Instruments (TXN-Strong Buy-$53 7/8) 2/09/98

Investor Suitability: Aggressive Growth
Texas Instruments and Hitachi (HIT-Not Rated-$83 7/16) have agreed to liquidate a
semiconductor manufacturing venture in the U.S. around March, after continuously
making losses because of sharper than expected price declines in memory chip prices.
The U.S. joint venture produces 16- and 64-megabit dynamic random access memory
(DRAM). We are seeing larger spending on projects for memory and semiconductors
being pushed out or canceled due to the Asian crisis. We believe this trend is likely to
continue as reductions may add some uncertainty in the near-term. Longer-term, we
believe this will lead to a significantly better pricing environment for the semiconductor
industry. We reiterate our Strong Buy rating for TXN and 12-month price target of $75.
