LG, the huge Korean conglomerate, owner of Zenith, and one of the manufacturers of Chromatic's MPACT chip, is strengthening its ties with C-Cube . Also, it sees acquisitions as a good growth strategy. If MPACT-2 is so good, then why is it strengthening its ties with CUBE? Can you say, encoding, DVx, consumer codecs, ZiVA, AViA, settops, Divicom, and motherboard?koreaherald.co.kr 02-12-98 LG Electronics Recruits U.S.-Based Expert to Fill Top Technology Post In an effort to bolster its multimedia system business, LG Electronics has invited Paik Woo-hyun, a U.S.-based expert in digital TV technology, to become its chief technology officer. The recruitment of Paik is part of what the company said is its plan to strengthen alliances with foreign companies with advanced technology in such strategic items as digital TV, handheld PC, personal digital assistant (PDA) and digital video disk (DVD). The company's move is based on the perception that the global market for digital devices will finally take off this year after years of slower-than-expected growth. The main stimulus is seen coming from the scheduled introduction of commercial digital TV service in the United States late this year, which has prompted companies to speed up efforts to prepare for the new opportunity. According to LG, the salient trend among major players is to enrich their technological assets through alliances or M&A with other companies. One example was the recent acquisition of Digital Equipment Corp. by Compacq, the world's largest computer vendor, for $9.6 billion. Behind these developments lies the fact that the speed and scope of change in digital technology have reached the level where no single company can meet its own technological requirements alone. In addition, the time and cost required for the development of necessary technologies have become so large that in many cases, companies cannot promote big projects without risking their own demise. Following this trend, LG announced that it will bolster collaboration with Qualcomm of the United States in the development of PDA. The company intends to use Qualcomm's CDMA (code division multiple access) cellular technology to give its PDA products wireless communications capabilities. For handheld computers, the company will strengthen ties with Microsoft, while for DVD, it will step up cooperation with C-cube, an American chip designer. In the digital TV segment, where the company intends to emerge as a major supplier, the company hopes Paik will enhance its development capabilities significantly. According to the company, Paik played a central role in drawing up the American standard for digital TV. An expert in digital signal compression and coding, Paik worked for General Instrument and Qualcomm. At General Instrument, he took charge of developing the Digicipher system, the American standard for satellite TV broadcasting. LG expects the new CTO to contribute to forging new ties with foreign companies and developing new businesses.
