No one was bothering Ukraine until Russia decided they wanted some land either. If Sweden or Finland were to discover massive oil, gas and rare earth deposits near the border with Russia, you can bet Vlad would dream up some justification for bombing another city filled with people. Cause and effect, bloodthirsty nations with ruthless leaders need to be kept in check. They only way to face a bully hell bent on risking WWIII, is with a bigger bully. They know their only hope to keep Putin in check is America. So, they are getting their pens ready to pony up the only military in the free world capable of keeping the red army inside Russian borders.
