Remember reading that early in WWI there was a huge explosion of patriotism - from every side. People who thought that Kaiser’s Germany was a sick society and was falling apart — suddenly became extreme nationalists. And the same happened in every country - even without the benefit of a propaganda superhighway we have today. Everyone also thought that the bad guys (depending on your side) will quickly learn their lesson - and the hostilities will be over in a couple of weeks. By the time they realized that they’re stuck - it was too late. The great meat grinder was running full speed — and kept demanding millions of victims.
