I think I read that the ship was 60 miles off shore when it "caught fire". So there would be no way to even see it, much less take a video of it from shore; but they might have seen smoke or flashes of light on the horizon.

What's even more interesting is that the Russians said nothing about casualties. All they eventually said is that it sunk during towing.
