This has been repeated in the history of man thousands of times. Why do you believe Putin and HIS Russians are different?
That is a fair question. Ultimately, it remains to be seen.

During Roman wars, killing most men of fighting age - and enslaving women and children - was not unusual. Soldiers and officers would share the plunder - but the sale of slaves was the way generals made their money. The great Julius Caesar - who was broke at the time he became Consul - was fabulously rich after several years of “expanding the Empire” in Europe.

Well, these days there is no slavery. Harming civilians is something most armies try to avoid. POW’s are protected by the Geneva agreements. Speaking of Russians - this morning, noted the tweet below - they sent to Zelensky’s office a long list of recently captured military personnel. I presume, this is in order for Ukraines government to be able to inform the families - and also, so they could track those individuals, and make sure they’re traded for Russian POW and/or eventually released. (Azov crazies didn’t treat Russian POW’s like human beings, btw).

They don't have the man power to hold all of Ukraine and I believe they know it.
