NATO in Ukraine did not happen, was not going to happen for a least 5 years and will likely not happen now.

Were they afraid Feb 23, then suddenly became desperately afraid overnight and had no choice but to launch a massive invasion (called a peacekeeping effort in the Dunbass region).

If they were so afraid and everyone agreed with the fear, why didn't they promote it as the reason for the attack?

Why, because the population wouldn't buy the nonsense. They had to invent a big bad bogeyman fear of Nazi's everywhere. Some in the west reading the propaganda believe it too.

Joining NATO is a big red herring.

Let me take it even further. If Putin and his cronies have fear of NATO it's this. They know, with NATO backing a country up, they can't invent a reason to invade without the US getting involved. They know NATO limits their expansionistic dreams of putting the old Soviet Union boundaries back in place. They know, it means they have to build their own economy and compete with the land and people they have. Obviously, they have no confidence in building a vibrant society like that. They would prefer to steal petrochemicals and land instead.

Fearing NATO therefore isn't fear of invasion - it's fear of limits to their expansion. After all, who in their right mind would fear NATO invading their country? Heck, most of NATO are so unmotivated by the enterprise they barely fund it.

That will obviously change now as NATO countries become highly motivated - cause and effect.

The point is - if he crocks today - it will take them no time at all to have someone replace him - and that person will continue virtually the same policies.

...I would not bet on that...... Putin may be one very unique puppy....even by Russian standards.......He is a very smart guy..........but all the rest?.......my God

Just think about it - they’re so convinced that they confronted the entire NATO. And then some. That’s a unique phenomenon in modern history. Worth trying to figure out. But, not too many try.
"Worth trying to figure out."

It's simple:

US owns NATO.

And "NATO" in the guise of US deep state bought the utterly corrupt Ukranian gov't, lock, stock and barrel.

Since the so-called color revolution US deep state has encouraged Uke gov't to persecute - and even kill - citizens of of Russian ethnic background*, (particularly in eastern part of the country where the dead, mostly ethnic Russian, over the past 7 - 8 years number over 15,000).

Object of the persecution is to get sociopathic thrills torturing, terrorizing and killing these under-people, chasing the rest away AND KEEP THE LAND.

Q.E.D.

I figured it out. Putin is a lawyer; He also figured it out.

AND a lot of these ethnic Russian Ukrainians are fleeing into HIS country. AND a lot of THEM have relatives in HIS country (since Stalin folded them into Ukraine less than a century ago because he was trying to keep the Russians and all the other soviet nationalities divided and conquered).

AND Putin, ever since he started running Russia, has been taking ever increasing stick from HIS citizens about the abuse their cousins are getting from the Uke govt AND what it's costing them.

For around a decade and a half Putin's been complaining to the EU, NATO, the US, the UN and just about anybody else who might listen about this loss of enjoyment of his dictatorial tenure. And the response was, more or less, "Yeah sure. We'll get right on it." As in, bupkis.

So being a lawyer, he went looking for a case and recent precedents and, of course, has found some set by the likes of the UN, US, NATO and the response from various important places has been, "Oh look. Over there, a squirrel," while the bombardment of Russian folk in Donbas by UKE army and militias increased steadily in intensity.

After telling everybody about ten times if they didn't clean up and stop the disgraceful behavior next door he would do something about it.

They didn't and he's doing something about it.

And now everyone's got damp depends, are clutching at their pearls, have the vapors, and are virtue signaling at a rate only exceeded by the combined volume of LA, Washington, Beijing, London, Berlin and Brussels sewer systems.

...........................................................................................................

*Do we think McCain and Graham were only visiting Ukraine merely for the thrill of bathing in romantic 'nationalist' machismo? Whatever those two fools and the others like them might have thought they were doing, what they were doing was giving license, permission, to worst parts of the already nasty Uke gov't to do whatever they wish to their ethnic Russian citizens.**
