The stock's modest reaction to such a negative bit of fundamental news is quite impressive. I continue to be bullish about the company's long-term prospects, however, I think that we are probably in for some rough going over the rest of the week thanks to AMAT and a re-evaluation of the slowdown.

I expect AMAT to disappoint the Street tomorrow with its earnings (after the close on Tuesday; conference call replay (800) 642-1687, pin 850463). The analysts are looking to AMAT's forward-looking guidance to help them understand the magnitude and timing of the current slowdown. I expect them to see problems in the book:bill, backlog, and comments about limited visibility. The market's reaction to such a conference call would be very interesting. Will it shrug off the bad news, as it has for SFAM? Or, will it punish the entire sector? The earnings and call may end up surprising me and being positive, but that's not how I'm playing it.

I sold a little of my SFAM today, bringing my total from 27% of my portfolio down to 17%. I also wrote March 30 covered calls against 40% of my remaining shares. I still have 38% of my money in the semiconductor sector, and I am bullish long-term, but I am worried that the Asian-related weakness might kill the sector's momentum and the rally we've been in for the last month or so.

Do your own research and draw your own conclusions.

Profitable investing,
